Key Messages:
- York Region Public Health is aware of and continues to monitor global COVID-19 trends, including emerging information about new variants and increased hospitalizations in the United States and elsewhere
- Wastewater surveillance shows low levels of COVID-19, however there is a slight increasing trend across the Greater Toronto Area and across Ontario
- EG.5 was detected in Ontario in early July and may represent over one third of samples, but at this time, XBB.1.16 continues to remain the most prevalent COVID-19 variant in York Region
- York Region Public Health also continues to monitor trends for other viruses including RSV and influenza as we head into the fall
- York Region and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommend elderly and vulnerable individuals who may still be at risk from severe illness from COVID-19 consider a booster COVID-19 vaccine as well as influenza vaccination later this fall; York Region Public Health will communicate further about this later in the season
