Working Together to Reduce Fire and Carbon Monoxide Deaths
Enbridge Gas partners with Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services through Safe Community Project Zero
RICHMOND HILL, ON, November 6, 2024 – Enbridge Gas Inc. and Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services (RHFES) have teamed up through Safe Community Project Zero to help eliminate fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths in Ontario.
RHFES received 432 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as part of the program, which, in collaboration with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC), will distribute over 14,500 alarms to high-risk residents in 75 Ontario communities. Enbridge Gas has invested $450,000 this year, continuing its 16-year support, which has supplied over 101,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.
“Carbon monoxide alarms are vital as a second line of defense against this silent killer,” said Rodney Smallwood, Operations Supervisor, Enbridge Gas. “We’re proud to support Ontario communities and increase awareness to keep people safe.”
Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of FMPFSC, emphasized the project’s focus on delivering these life-saving devices to the most vulnerable communities: “Every Ontario home with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage needs a working carbon monoxide alarm.”

Regional Automated Speed Enforcement
Automated speed enforcement (ASE) is a system that uses a camera and speed measurement device to enforce speed limits. If a vehicle exceeds the speed limit in an ASE-enforced area, the system captures the image and it is reviewed by a provincial offences officer. The ticket, which contains a digitized copy of the image and an enlargement of the license plate, is sent only by mail to the registered plate holder. Tickets are not communicated through text or emails.
When an ASE camera is in the area, vehicle operating speeds are reduced by approximately 10 km/hr and speed limit compliance increases by approximately 25%.
Based on the positive results of the current ASE program and the introduction of a Regional administrative penalty system, Regional Council approved expanding the program to an additional 60 fixed ASE cameras. These cameras will be located throughout York Region between 2024 and 2026, with 20 of them being installed by the end of 2024.
Regional ASE cameras are only authorized for use in school areas and community safety zones. ASE warning signs were installed in June 2024 and were in place for a minimum of 90 days before camera activation. Signs are replaced with camera in-use signs when ASE is activated.
A map and a list of the York Region ASE locations is available here. Additional ASE locations may be operated by the nine local cities and towns.

York Region Transit senior fare
Currently, York Region Transit (YRT) does not offer free transit for seniors, but provides a senior fare of $2.45 with PRESTO, a 44% discount from the regular cash fare. After completing 28 trips in a month using PRESTO, all remaining YRT trips are free for seniors.
